Waste leaving a site does not go straight to landfill, and understanding the path explains the pricing.
Transfer and sorting
Mixed loads typically go to a facility where they are sorted — partly mechanically, partly by hand. That sorting is labour and it is reflected in the gate fee for mixed waste.
Recovery
Concrete and masonry are crushed for reuse. Metals go to scrap. Clean timber is mulched or reprocessed. Cardboard and plastics are baled.
Landfill
What is left. In WA a landfill levy applies to waste going to landfill, which is a large part of why disposal costs what it does — and why a sorted load is cheaper than a mixed one.
What this means for you
Every stream you separate on site is a stream that skips the expensive path. Sorting is not just environmental housekeeping; it is the cheapest lever you have on disposal cost.
