Construction and demolition waste is one of the most recoverable waste streams there is — if it arrives sorted.
What gets recovered
- Concrete, brick and rubble — crushed into recycled aggregate and road base.
- Metals — almost entirely recyclable and worth separating.
- Clean timber — mulched or reprocessed if untreated and unpainted.
- Cardboard and plastic packaging — recyclable if kept dry and separate.
- Plasterboard offcuts — recoverable through specific facilities.
Why it is worth the effort
Sorted streams cost less to dispose of than mixed waste, and many commercial projects now have recovery targets to report against. Sorting as you go is far quicker than separating a mixed pile later.
Practical approach
Two or three bins where there is room, clearly labelled, positioned where people already walk. If the correct bin is further away than the wrong one, the wrong one gets used.
