Wall removal: what to check before you start

· 1 min read · Demolition

Taking a wall out looks simple until it is holding something up or carrying a service you did not know about.

Is it structural

If a wall runs perpendicular to the floor or ceiling joists, or sits directly above another wall on a lower level, treat it as load-bearing until someone qualified says otherwise. Structural work needs engineering input and temporary propping — it is not a judgement call to make on the day.

What is inside it

Power, data, water and sometimes gas run through wall cavities. Isolate before you open anything up. In older Perth homes and commercial fit-outs, what is in the wall rarely matches what the drawings say.

Age of the building

Pre-1990 construction raises the asbestos question. That is not a wall to open up speculatively — see our note on asbestos below.

Where the waste goes

A single internal wall produces more material than people expect. Have the bin on site before you start, not after the room is full.
