What asbestos means for a Perth demolition job

· 1 min read · Demolition

Asbestos was used widely in Australian construction until the 1980s and was not fully banned until 2003. In practice, anything built or refurbished before the 1990s deserves caution.

Where it shows up

Fibre cement sheeting in eaves, bathrooms and laundries, vinyl floor tiles and their backing, some textured ceilings, pipe lagging, and fencing. Much of it looks entirely ordinary.

The rule worth following

If you do not know what a material is and the building is old enough, stop and have it identified before disturbing it. Undisturbed asbestos is generally low risk. Broken, drilled or smashed asbestos is not.

Who can remove it

Asbestos removal in WA is licensed work with specific requirements depending on the type and quantity. It is not general demolition labour.

TODO(client): confirm whether UZI holds or intends to hold asbestos removal licensing, so this page can state the position plainly.

If you are unsure what is in a building, ring 0450 704 884 and we will tell you honestly whether it is a job for us or for a licensed removalist.
