Green waste is cheap to dispose of and gets composted or mulched — right up until something non-organic goes in with it.
What belongs
Lawn clippings, prunings, leaves, branches, palm fronds and weeds. Soil in small quantities is usually tolerated; large amounts often are not.
What ruins a load
Plastic plant pots and trays, irrigation fittings, hosing, treated pine and sleepers, bricks and pavers, and general rubbish that has been thrown into the garden bed.
Before a big clean-up
Walk the area and pull out the obvious contaminants first. Ten minutes of sorting can be the difference between a green waste rate and a general waste rate.
Palm fronds and large branches
Bulky and awkward, and they fill a bin far faster than their weight suggests. Cutting down to size before loading gets much more into the same bin.
