Mixed waste is the most expensive way to dispose of a demolition job. Sorted material is cheaper and much of it gets recycled.
The main streams
- Clean concrete, brick and rubble — crushed and reused as road base and fill.
- Scrap metal — worth separating, always.
- Clean timber — recoverable if it is not painted, treated or full of fixings.
- General waste — the expensive bin. The goal is to keep this one small.
Doing it as you go
Sorting during the strip is far quicker than picking through a single pile afterwards. If there is room for two or three bins, use them.
What cannot be mixed
Asbestos and other hazardous material have their own handling and disposal requirements and never go in a general bin.
