Most contracts require a property handed over empty and reasonably clean. The date is fixed, so the planning matters.
Work in this order
- Sort what is leaving — keep, sell, donate, dispose. Do this before anyone books a truck.
- Remove the bulky items — furniture and whitegoods take the most space and the most people.
- Clear the sheds, garage and garden — always more than expected, and usually left to last.
- Then clean. Cleaning before the clear-out is wasted work.
Leave a buffer
Book the clear-out a few days before settlement, not the morning of. Something always takes longer than planned and there is no room to recover on the day.
The commonly forgotten spots
The roof space, under the house, behind the shed, and the side passage. Inspectors check them.
