Container unloading safety basics

· 1 min read · Container Unloading

Container work concentrates several hazards in a small space.

Opening the doors

Loads shift in transit. Stand to the side, open one door at a time, and expect something to be leaning against it.

Heat

A closed steel container in the Perth sun is far hotter than the yard. Open it and let it vent before anyone works inside, rotate people, and keep water close.

Plant and people

Forklifts reversing near pedestrians is the highest-consequence risk on the job. Agreed exclusion zones, high-vis and eye contact with the operator.

Stacking

Heavy low, light high, nothing stacked beyond a stable height. Most crush injuries come from a stack that was fine until it was not.

Manual handling

Hand-stacked containers are hundreds of repeated lifts. Rotate people through different tasks rather than leaving the same person lifting all day.
